Tom Nielsen, an award-winning art director, is now also applying his skills to the canvas. With a subject matter that often focuses on older architecture found throughout his home town of Madison, NJ, Tom paints in a realistic style using visible brush strokes and a minimal palette. ​Stripping away the unnecessary details and using tight crops are two key techniques used to develop the strong graphic image that is common throughout his work.​ While most of Tom’s subject matter can be found close to home, he also takes in plenty of inspiration from his travels. Before moving to Madison as a child, he was born in Copenhagen, Denmark where he still travels back often, taking in all of the great history, art and innovative design that the city has to offer. His paintings also reflect his love for the outdoors, including his time spent living in Alaska. These days Tom can often be found kayaking on nearby lakes or out on a river fly fishing which inspired his recent series of trout paintings.
